John Wilkins

EAST Staff

is a passionate youth basketball coach and player development specialist with over a decade of professional playing experience across Europe and Africa, complemented by NBA Summer League coaching exposure His journey in basketball began with a strong foundation—his father played in the NBA from 1977 to 1985 for the San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz. Watching him and learning from his insights shaped his love for the game and his understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest levels. As a player from 2013 to 2024, he represented the Moroccan National Team (2016–2019), earning All-Star honors in Morocco in 2016 and an All-Tournament Team selection in Cancun in 2012 at IllinoisStateUniversity. When Coach Wilkins was 17, he competed in the Euroleague with Le Mans in France, honing his skills in elite European competition, and as a pro, he played in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), the NBA-sponsored professional league that continues to elevate African basketball.

Today, Coach Wilkins channels that experience into coaching. He currently co-coaches middle school basketball in Hudson County, NJ, where he designs structured practices focused on fundamentals, defensive principles, and position-specific training for guards and frontcourt players. Coach Wilkins builds accountability, fosters a competitive team culture, communicates regularly with parents, and prepares athletes for high school recruitment pathways. As a co-owner, GM, Coach, and Player Development leader for The Grind Season since 2022, he runs individual and team sessions, creates age-specific skill progressions, conducts film reviews, and ready players for european and american exposure camps while maintaining strong local basketball networks. In 2024, Coach Wilkins served as a guest coach at NBA Summer League in Phoenix and Las Vegas, assisting with practice planning, player development drills, and strategic film sessions. His philosophy is simple: basketball development rests on structure, accountability, and confidence. He teaches young athletes not just to compete, but to truly understand the game—mastering spacing, decision-making, discipline, and professionalism. Exposure follows real development. Coach Wilkins is committed to mentoring players for high school, AAU, and beyond—helping them reach their full potential on and off the court.
